Kara & Kramer’s Snowy Engagement Session at Mt. Rainier + Essential Winter Tips

Kara and Kramer’s engagement session was nothing short of magical. We ventured to Mount Rainier in November, right as the winter season began to show its full force. A beautiful, crazy snowstorm greeted us as we arrived at Paradise Meadows near the Skyline Trailhead. Despite the chilly weather and flurries, Kara and Kramer were absolute champs, braving the cold for some truly unforgettable moments.

The drive from Seattle to Mount Rainier takes about two hours, and as soon as you catch a glimpse of the mountain, you know the journey is worth it. The snowstorm added an ethereal touch to the already stunning scenery. Thankfully, we didn’t have to venture far from the parking lot to find perfect backdrops. The deep snow, tall evergreens, and soft winter light created an almost storybook-like setting.

Kara and Kramer’s love for each other radiated through every shot, making the experience all the more special. We spent the afternoon laughing, trekking through snow, and capturing moments that perfectly encapsulated their joy and connection. It was an adventure to remember and one I’m thrilled to share!

Tips for Visiting Mt. Rainier in Winter

Mount Rainier is an incredible destination year-round, but winter adds a whole new layer of beauty and challenge. If you’re planning to visit, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Getting There:

Paradise, where we shot Kara and Kramer’s session, is about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Seattle. The road from the Nisqually Entrance to Longmire is open year-round, but the stretch from Longmire to Paradise is typically only open on weekends and closes nightly. Check weather and road conditions before heading out, as snowstorms can delay plowing.

Snow Chains:

From November 1 to May 1, all vehicles are required to carry snow chains, even if you’re driving a 4WD or AWD vehicle. This is non-negotiable and for good reason. Icy and snowy roads can be unpredictable, and having chains on hand ensures you’re prepared.

Dress Warmly:

Layers are your best friend in the winter! Insulated layers, waterproof boots, gloves, and hats are must-haves. Hand warmers or a cozy blanket can make a big difference, especially during a photo session.

Plan for Daylight:

Winter days are short, so aim for early afternoon or golden hour before sunset for the best light. The diffused glow from snowfall creates a dreamy aesthetic that’s perfect for engagement photos.

Safety First:

Let someone know your plans and stick to marked paths. Be mindful of avalanche risks and changing weather conditions. Bring essentials like water, snacks, and a fully charged phone to stay prepared.

Cost to Enter the Park: Entry fees depend on the type of pass you have. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Standard Vehicle Fee: $30 per vehicle for seven days of unlimited entry.
  • Annual Pass: $55 for one year of unlimited entry for the pass owner and passengers in the same car.
  • Per Person Fee: $15 for seven days of unlimited entry for walk-ups or single bicycles.
  • Motorcycle Fee: $25 for seven days of unlimited entry for one motorcycle and passenger.
  • Senior Annual Pass: $20 for US citizens and permanent residents aged 62+.
  • Senior Lifetime Pass: $80 for US citizens and permanent residents aged 62+.
  • Military Annual Pass: Free for current US military and dependents.
  • Military Lifetime Pass: Free for Gold Star Family members and veterans.
