Kailey & Kyle’s Winter Wonderland Engagement at Rattlesnake Ridge + Must-Know Snowy Hiking Tips

Kailey and Kyle’s engagement session was a perfect mix of adventure, love, and winter magic! Rattlesnake Lake, located just about 40 minutes from Seattle, set the stage for their snowy celebration. We spent the day exploring the lake, hiking through the snow-covered trails, and capturing stunning moments both at ground level and atop the iconic Rattlesnake Ridge.

Their story is as sweet as their session: both soccer players, they met at an ugly sweater Christmas party over a box of Franzia wine. Fast forward almost five years, and they’re now planning their big day! Kailey, a medical professional, and Kyle, an engineer, balance each other beautifully—a dynamic that was so evident during their session.

The snowy landscape added a magical touch, but it also brought its challenges. Hiking in winter conditions requires preparation, but the reward? Sweeping, clear views of the North Bend area from the ridge. It was an unforgettable day with a fun and easygoing couple who were up for every adventure.

Tips for Visiting Rattlesnake Lake in Winter

If you’re planning your own snowy session or just a winter adventure, here’s what you need to know about Rattlesnake Lake and Rattlesnake Ridge:

1. Getting There

Rattlesnake Lake is a quick 40-minute drive from Seattle, making it an easy day trip. The parking lot is located at the base of the trailhead, but in winter, it can be icy. If you’re visiting late in the day, park outside the gate to avoid getting locked in.

2. Hiking the Ridge

  • Trail Details: The trail is about 1.9 miles to the ridge, making it roughly a 4-mile round trip. It’s considered moderately challenging and can take around 3 hours to complete.
  • Conditions: Snow and ice are common in winter. Bring crampons or microspikes for better grip on slippery sections.
  • Views: The exposed ledge offers breathtaking views of the Cedar River Watershed and the surrounding snowy peaks. Be cautious—this area has sheer cliffs, so tread carefully.

3. Prepare for Winter Hiking

  • Dress in layers and wear waterproof clothing to stay warm and dry.
  • Pack essentials like water, snacks, and a first-aid kit.
  • Check trail conditions before heading out. Snow can make the trail more challenging but also incredibly peaceful.

4. Dogs on the Trail

Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash. Be mindful of their safety in slippery or icy conditions.

5. Leave No Trace

Help keep this beautiful area pristine by packing out all trash and following Leave No Trace principles.
