When Reed and Jon reached out about their engagement session, I knew it had to be somewhere extraordinary to match their vibrant energy and love story. Smith Rock State Park, nestled in the heart of Central Oregon near Bend, was the perfect choice. With its iconic cliffs, towering spires, and dramatic canyons shaped by ancient volcanic activity, the park is a living testament to the power of nature. Its rugged beauty, combined with the Crooked River winding through the caldera, created a breathtaking backdrop for their love story.

Reed and Jon are nothing short of incredible in front of the camera. We originally met during a styled wedding shoot, where they blew me away with their natural chemistry and effortless presence. Working with them again felt like pure magic. They’re the kind of couple who need little to no direction—they just know how to work the camera while staying completely immersed in their love for one another.

As we explored the park, we captured moments that showcased not only their connection but also the unique beauty of Smith Rock. The golden light of the High Desert illuminated the cliffs, and their playful energy brought every photo to life. They embraced every moment, from climbing rocky trails to standing at the edge of breathtaking overlooks. Toward the end of our session, the weather decided to add its own magic. A light rain began to fall, but the sun continued to shine brightly, creating a stunning sun shower. Reed and Jon didn’t hesitate—they danced in the rain, laughing and twirling as if it were part of their plan all along. Then, as if the universe wanted to give its blessing, a rainbow appeared. It was the kind of moment you dream of as a photographer but can never predict. They stood in front of the rainbow, their love radiating as brightly as the colors arching across the sky, bringing the shoot to an unforgettable close.

Smith Rock isn’t just a photographer’s dream—it’s a place steeped in history and natural wonder. The park spans 652 acres and lies along the northern edge of the Crooked River caldera, a volcanic depression formed through super-eruptions millions of years ago. The dramatic landscape, with its cliffs and spires, has been carved by ancient lava flows and shaped by the Crooked River over time. This area is also the traditional homeland of the Tenino (Warm Springs) and Northern Paiute people, who referred to it as the “Animal Village” for its abundance of wildlife.

Reed and Jon’s engagement session at Smith Rock was an experience I’ll never forget.
